This covers areas in DC, MD and (sh-h-h) VA but since the birds have wings, they are all of interest. Not too much at KAG, Blue Grosbeak and two Little Blue Herons among the more expected species. There has been a large decline in Black Tern numbers on the Potomac, he estimated about 40 birds mainly from Founder's Park to Belle Haven. He feels that his estimate of 85 two days ago was really an underestimate, as he found other "viewing points" and got a better count today. In any case, lots of Black Terns are passing through. Shorebird numbers at Hunting Creek are still very high, about 120 "peeps" including three White-rumps, 90+ Pectoral Sandpipers, the only other new bird from the earlier visit was a Turnstone. Not too much in the way of shorebirds on the Hydrilla, just a few Yellowlegs. There were about 150 Forster's Terns and ca. 40 Caspian Terns. There were five Lesser Scaup also on the river. We will continue to survey this area and everyone should keep looking for possible White-winged Terns or other goodies! Cheers, Gail Mackiernan and Barry Cooper ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
