Bell Date: Thursday, August 23, 2001 2:48 PM Subject: RIDGELY WWTF On Thursday morning, 23 August, I visited the wastewater treatment = facility at Ridgely, MD. Some of you may already know that they are = replacing the liner under one of the holding ponds there. I found this = work to be well underway with a couple of power shovels and earth-moving = equipment doing their respective things. This activity undoubtedly = affects any birds who might visit either this pond or its still-in-use = neighbor. I had a nice chat with a Mr. Rowe about birding there. He is = quite aware of the number of birders who have visited the place and very = supportive of their coming. We have yet another friend at a key place on = the Shore. Mr. Rowe told me that the relining of the pond would not be completed = until mid-November. He did say that the contractor does not work there = on Friday and activity should be minimal or absent on that day of the = week. Unfortunately, the place is gated and locked on the weekends. It = is possible that shore- and waterbird migrants might spend a few days = there before being disturbed by construction. If you are interested in = visiting this place, you should plan to do so during normal business = hours (8 AM - 5 PM) on Fridays, at least until sometime in November. If = something really unusual turns up we will have to deal with it on an ad = hoc basis on the weekend. Please respect the intention of gates and = locks so that we can continue to have access to this interesting site = once the construction has been completed.
