I got quite a few responses, especially from Marylanders. Most who use FRS had no particular channel/code preference and almost 100% felt a general channel designation would be very helpful. Some who do not yet have radios with privacy codes were not enthused about a code designation. However, these earlier model radios are being phased out and the newer ones with 14 channels and 38 codes are now very inexpensive. We just upgraded last spring, for example. I asked the same question as you at the beginning -- the answer is, the codes ARE supposed to be compatible between manufacturers. I have since tried this in practice and found it to be so. Occasionally one radio cannot seem to "talk" to another but this may be a malfunction -- on a recent CBC, for example, one of our (identical) radios could communicate with Paul O'Brien's and one couldn't. (One reason we bought new radios!) One thing to emphasize is this channel/code recommendation is for general field communication and should not be considered a "directive" to use this channel/code for all types of situations. Barry and I use channel 8 between us for private communications (e.g. "where the $%#$@!!**! ARE you???").
