Subject: Lesser Scaup, Black Terns (PG County)

I had a pleasant afternoon visiting several spots along the Potomac in
Prince George's County this afternoon. We started in Piscataway Park (at
Mockley Point) and highlights included two immature Bald Eagles, a Pileated
Woodpecker, Great Egret, empid. flycatcher, and several Great Blue Herons.
We bumped into Dave Mozurkowich, who mentioned that he had seen several
Black Terns and shorebirds on a sandbar north of Fort Foote (just south of
the Wilson Bridge).

So, we went there next and walked along the Potomac in an area just north
of Fort Foote. I was able to pick out one Black Tern on the sandbar, plus
three others in flight. In addition, there were several Forsters Terns,
two Caspian Terns, several Great Blue Herons, and several ducks in molting
plumage, which, due to the distance, I wasn't able to sort out.

Finally, we stopped at Fort Washington Marina where I was surprised to see
a male, non-breeding, Lesser Scaup just a few feet from shore in a small
group of mallards. I got good looks at the duck, including the shape of
the head. Forsters Terns and many gulls were also present at this location.
