This concerns Chimney Swift counts. Carol quickly organized a count in Baltimore after I forwarded Jim Stasz' posting of Aug 30 forwarding info about a national counting project. _________________ Sept. 7-10, 2001 was announced as A Swift Night Out, the first nation-wide Chimney Swift count. Baltimore Bird Club responded, sending in the following information for Baltimore City. Our counters included Alice & David Nelson, Carol Schreter, Helene Gardel, Jeanne Bowman, and others. Sept 7, At 5th Regiment Armory, Howard and Dophin Sts. Count = 2416 Sept 8, At Mill Center in Hampden, Darby St. between Chestnut and Elm. Count = 4478. Sept 9, At Mill Center, again, Count = 4205 Nation-wide results appear at www.concentric.net/~Dwa/page58.html This website (www.concentric.net/~Dwa) also contains video of the inside of a Chimney, with swifts. It appears that 15 states reported. Of these, only Reading, PA, counted more, a total of 5000 Chimney Swifts on a single night. ________________________________ For a field trip to see big bunches of swifts swirling into their roost, join Carol's field trip in Baltimore: SEP 20 (Thurs), 7:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. CHIMNEY SWIFTS IN HAMPDEN.
