The results were mixed: slow and spectacular. The Veteran's Memorial area was EMPTY of birds save for some calling American Crows and Bluejays. It soon became apparent why: an immature Cooper's Hawk was hunting the area. It perched in plain view, giving us close looks at every field mark you could wish to see as it moved back and forth on the branch. Spectacular! Finally, it took off after a crow and we lost it. Since there were obviously not going to be any warblers on that side of the Mall, we headed over to Constitution Gardens, where we watched for some time a small flock of warblers that included American Redstart, some Magnolia Warblers, a Black-and-white Warbler and a Northern Parula, as well as an Eastern Wood-Pewee. And then it was back to work for us.
