Patty:

All things are possible, especially with birds, but they are not all
equally likely. Black-capped Chickadees in Southern Maryland at the
beginning of September would be extraordinary because during invasion years
the first birds do not show up until nearly two months later. All the
movement so far has been north of the Canadian border and it did not begin
until this week.
I can't emphasize strongly enough how difficult a field problem the two
chickadees can be. Despite the fact that there are reported field marks,
primarily the white edges to the greater coverts, there is an immense amount
of overlap. Empidonax flycatchers are often easier than the two chickadees.
Ont he other hand, I did not see the birds and am in no position to say
they weren't Black-cappeds. You should check with Bob Ringler about the
timing of migration and the status in Southern Maryland. He has better info
than I do,
