Schwarz" Subject: Lake Elkhorn, Ruddy, HowCo I visited the draining Lake Elkhorn in Columbia this afternoon 3:30-4:45. The following were present. Great Egret 2 Great Blue Heron 2 Green Heron 1 Ruddy Duck 1 (male) Ring-billed Gull 4 Greater Yellowlegs 2 Lesser Yellowlegs 1 Solitary Sandpiper 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3-4 Black-throated Blue Warbler 1 (female) I THINK there were White-throated Sparrows around, but I'm not positive, as I have relearned the chip note for the season yet! Actually had a Greater, Lesser, and Solitary in the scope all at once. Wonderfully instructive. And on a very positive note, the female Black-throated Blue was eating Tearthumb berries! Elkhorn is draining. There's already some nice mud at the end farthest from the dam. Plenty of deep water left for waterfowl, but it's now one of the few spots in HowCo with shorebird potential. To get there from rt. 32, get of on Broken Land Parkway, go north. Park in lot on right after Snowden River Parkway.
