Looked out and a Sharpie or Coopers was in the tree just a few feet off my balcony. I'm not that quick and both of us were startled so not sure which it was. First I've seen one close-up, or any hawk among the condominiums like that. Red-shouldered are fairly common cruising the parking lot though. If I'd been a songbird, I'd have been lunch last since I'm so used to the B-Jay's faking Red-shoulders it took me several seconds to decide to look up and see a real one just abovve me. Question about Catbirds. Is there any in-depth writing on them? I've found them most interesting birds but thus far all I've found is the usual general info. Was also wondering about the Catbird convention I encountered at Assateague on Tuesday & Wednesday of last week. First time I've visited the northern end of the island, and although I'm used to seeing lots of Catbirds, never this many. My campsite was surrounded by them, and one in particular seemed to be in charge. I also noted that this one, and others were quite fat. I've never noticed that before either - do some fatten up for longer migrations than others? And how long do they usually convene at Assateague? Although "my" birds were still at the campsite early Thursday morning, I didn't see much activity as I packed out. I guess that was more than one question.
