MD on October 21, 2001. 2 Canada Geese 2 Turkey Vulture 3 Black Vulture 2 Red-tailed Hawk 3 Sharp-shinned migrating 2 Great-Horned Owls - predawn duetting and still singing. 3 Mourning Dove Remains of another taken by an accipiter may keep the = number down for a while. 4 Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - female 2 Downy Woodpecker 1 Hairy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 2 Pileated Woodpecker 1 Eastern Phoebe 1 Blue-headed Vireo Probably 1 Yellow-throated Vireo. Not a good look but too yellow and = wingbars to be any warbler I could come close to this time of the year. = Backlite birds can be tough in the canopy. 3 Blue Jay 10 American Crows 6 Carolina Chickadee 8 Tufted Titmouse 4 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 male Red-breasted Nuthatch - taking sunflower seed. =20 2 Carolina Wren 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Golden Crowned Kinglet 12 Eastern Bluebirds 20 American Robin 1 Hermit Thrush - chuck, chuck calls 9 European Starlings 1 Mockingbird=20 12 Yellow-rumped Warblers=20 2 Grackles - flying over 10 Red-winged Blackbirds flying over 6 Cardinals 1 Chipping Sparrow 4 White-throated Sparrow 1 Dark-eyed Junco 10 House Finch 16 Goldfinch Gwen and I then went over to the old sewage treatment plant in Bryans = Road, Charles County for about three hours to look for sparrows. Not = many sparrows but we had some nice birds for our efforts.=20 The highlights were: 1 Great Blue Heron trying to hide in a Pine Tree 1 Merlin heading south 3 Sharp-shinned Hawk 25 Laughing Gull in a kettle overhead* 1 Pileated Woodpecker 2 Northern Flicker 2 Eastern Phoebe 8 Cedar Waxwing 2 Golden-crowned Kinglet (Kinglets are cute!) 8 Ruby-crowned Kinglet =20 1 Hermit Thrush 7 Yellow-rumped Warbler 1 Yellow Palm Warbler 1 male Black-throated Blue Warbler - late 1 ? American (Yellowstart) Redstart - late 1 female Common Yellowthroat 2 Eastern Towhee 3 Field Sparrow 20 Song Sparrow 30 White-throated Sparrow 2 Dark-eyed Junco About 2000 Laughing Gulls were at Brown Station Road on Saturday at mid = day but no Franklin's could be found. One of the employees, Bobby, said = Monday or Tuesday is better for larger flocks of gulls. I work for now. Enjoy the birds.
