I saw no other human beings at either location! Bird highlights: a juv. COOPER'S HAWK at KAG was being hounded from perch to perch by a small flock of crows. A juv. RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was calling nearby. KAG had 2 WOOD DUCK and a male HOODED MERGANSER along with the usual MALLARD and a few KILLDEER. Lots of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS in the trees above the KAG boardwalk The tall weeds in the "no-mow" area of KP had lots of birds -- most were AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, with HOUSE FINCHES, SONG SPARROWS, and smaller numbers of SWAMP SPARROWS and SAVANNAH SPARROWS. Later in the morning I went over to the National Arboretum in a bid (quite unsuccessful!) to find some of the winter finches that have been reported from all over, especially to our north. There was a single RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH in one of the pine trees in the Grove of State Trees. Several individuals of this species wintered in this location last year. Other bird of interest at the NA was a young YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. Lots of DARK-EYED JUNCOS all over. Mike Bowen Bethesda D.H.
