MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The DC Planning Department has released a tentative plan for the development of Kingman and Heritage islands, in the Anacostia River, for low-impact recreational, educational, and wildlife habitat use. In addition to clean-up of possible toxic wastes, the plan includes the following: For Kingman, the larger island: beginning at the wider, upstream end, a large "meadow," probably a grassy area for recreation, an "adventure" playground, a small nature center; on the narrower, downstream portion, a couple of clearings for sculpture, a canoe/kayak tie-up, and a couple of bird observation towers. A system of pedestrian/bike paths will run the length of the island. For Heritage, the smaller island: a pedestrian path around the periphery For both islands, eventual removal of exotic and pest plants to be replaced with natives. The pedestrian access bridges have already been rebuilt. An initial environmental assessment has been done; copies are available to the public. The next steps are to assess the environmental impacts of this plan, to create a more detailed site plan, and to complete construction. Now is the time for input from birders!
