A pleasant day with lots of birds. 72 species with no effort for a big list (missed House Finch, Turkey Vulture...). And never a dull moment. Even during the height of the mid-morning downpour when bird activity was at its lowest, I ran into Jack Saba who told me he had just seen a Turkey at Greenbelt Park. The Jaeger Tract, if you know the area. For those of us who associate migration with a variety of warblers, I have good news -- migration is still holding on. The evidence is a late BLACKPOLL at Piscataway Park this afternoon. For the rest of us with more eclectic tastes, the day was at least as interesting. Some highlights: 4 Great Egrets at the end of Wharf Road, 16 species of waterfowl including a BRANT near Mockley Point, 4 species of shorebirds including a Dunlin at the south end of Selby Bay and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW south of the wild flower garden at Lake Artemesia. Now, if I could only find a winter finch. Or even a Red-Breasted Nuthatch...
