It was a quiet morning. Highlights were 3 Pileated Woodpeckers in view at once, in two different places; a Winter Wren in plain view, a Fox Sparrow, and a fairly close immature Red-shouldered Hawk. This afternoon I went roving. Along the Anacostia River I counted/estimated at least 400 Laughing Gulls along with 50 or so gulls of other species at a marina and in the river just north of Pennsylvania Avenue. At Kenilworth Park there were at least 5 Savannah Sparrows in the let-grow area, an adult Sharp-shinned and an immature Cooper's Hawk, a Horned Lark, and American Robins flying around constantly, going every which direction, at a considerable altitude. Finally, after sunset, an adult Red-tailed Hawk wheeled above the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Maryland. A pleasant warm afternoon for sure.
