Balestri" Subject: Weekend Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Bob and I had a leisurely weekend of birding in MD and DE. We hit Blackwater, Truitt's Landing, EA Vaughn, Assateague, Ocean City, Indian River Inlet (including the Burton's Island Trail), Rehoboth, Pickering Beach/Little Creek, Port Mahon, and Bombay Hook. Weather was a bit cold and cloudy on Saturday, but Sunday was spectacular. We only had 91 species, way short of you power birders of last week, but a most enjoyable time. Thanks to those who posted species and places on the Osprey this past week. Highlights were the Leonid showers (WOW), walking right in to see the Harry Potter movie in Rehoboth (a lot of fun to see the kids' reactions), a Ross' Goose at Blackwater (lifer for me), Virginia and King rails at Truitt's Landing, a Common Goldeneye at Pickering Beach, and 2 American Pipits flying back and forth above our car, singing prettily, for about 5 minutes at Bombay Hook. Missed the Snowy and the godwit (didn't have those detailed instructions that were on the net when we got back!). Searched mightily for a Nelson's Sharptail (would be a lifer), but no luck. Maybe next time. I have had Fox Sparrows and Purple Finches in my yard this past week and Friday I heard and saw a Black-capped Chickadee at my feeder. I sometimes get the hybrids that come down from the Watershed area near my house, but this was (I presume) one of the northern irruption guys. All the field marks were visible -- scraggly bib, longish tail, whitish cheek, white on shoulder area, larger than the nearby Carolina Chickadees, and a very slowww DEE, DEE, DEE. He didn't stick around long and then we left for parts east, so I haven't seen him since. Hope he hangs around. -- Marcia E.
