The closest were a few sightings near Chain Bridge and many at Great Falls, both a few miles away. Today, for more than an hour, I listened to a Bald Eagle--an immature judging from the harshness of its chatters and squawks--from somewhere inside heavily wooded Ruppert Island in the Potomac, the first island upstream from Sycamore Island at Lock 6. For more than an hour, dozens of American and Fish crows were raising a ruckus in the island's trees, and for more than an hour I tried to see the eagle--if only for one of those small personal achievements that makes birding so pleasurable. It apparently was down low, on the side of the island's spine that faces Virginia, and I never did get a look at it. But it was still a treat.
