When I looked into purchasing a scope, I realized that I was severely, long-termed addicted and that if I was fiscally responsible and purchased the less expensive scope, I would still be subject to constant cravings for a better one and not be happy till I traded up. We eventually purchased a Kowa TSN-3 and it's been one of the best presents we've ever given ourselves. NOW, I'm just craving for the day in the far distant future when we can spring for a second scope and I won't have to share with someone. If you can stretch the budget and skip the in-between stage, you probably won't regret it.
