MD is still lagging previous years: 338 + 6 possible new species -- 81.6% 1999 339 + 5 possible new species -- 81.9% 2000 I suspect that many of those not seen this year were pelagic species, since, to my knowledge, there was only one trip made to MD waters this in 2001. This makes a difference, but MD birders were obviously making up some of the slack elsewhere. DC is doing somewhat better, but is still short of the 2000 percentage mark. DC now has 224 + 5 possible new species -- 71.3% 2001 so far 224 + 2 possible new species -- 72.3% 2000 We did not have a DC comp in 1999. Even though DC is neck and neck on total species, the changes to the DC list made the challenge more difficult. It is interesting to note that both MD and DC are picking up quite a few possible new species each year and that the rate, at least in MD is fairly consistent. Hopefully, we are all becoming more and more aware of the birds around us, and which ones are clearly different! I'll do a more detailed comparison after the close of the year...comments by MDOpreyers are most welcome, too.
