Ruth and I just got back from a visit to the Eastern Shore. The = weather was foggy, drizzly, and very warm. I wore my December birding = clothes and about had a heat stroke.=20 We came south from Elkton and home through Ocean City via 50. The = most abundant birds were Snow Geese, Canada Geese, Green-winged Teal, = and Mallards. We saw no ducks on bay side in waters on Route 50 in = Delaware. Highlights at our stops were: Bombay Hook: =20 =3D=3DGreen-winged teal =3D=3DWatching a Harrier work very close to us=20 =3D=3DTundra Swans =3D=3DYellowlegs =3D=3DDunlin =3D=3DMany Pintails =3D=3DSeeing Snow Geese barely visible through the fog--very abstract. =3D=3DHearing a Ringed-neck Pheasant Broadkill Beach: =3D=3DMany, many Green-winged Teal =3D=3DFlight after flight of Snow Geese flying overhead Crystal Lake: =3D=3DMany birds =3D=3DCanvas Backs =3D=3DRuddys =3D=3DDouble Crested Cormorants Indian River Inlet: =3D=3DGreat Cormorant =3D=3DRed-throated Loons =3D=3DCommon Loons =3D=3DOld Squaw (I just can't make myself say that other name) Driving South on 50: =3D=3DGreat Egret in median strip At 4th Street in OC: =3D=3DBrant =3D=3DOyster Catchers =3D=3DOne lone Turkey Vulture walking on island =3D=3DRed-breasted Mergansers OC Jetty: =3D=3DPurple Sandpipers =3D=3DRuddy Turnstones =3D=3DSerf Scoters (there may have been other species but with the haze, = high tide, and distance I couldn't identify any) At Hooper's: =3D=3DBlack-crowned Night Heron flying by West OC Pond: =3D=3DMany ducks =3D=3DSeveral Great Blue Herons =3D=3DHooded Merganser Approaching Trappe: =3D=3DTen Black Vultures on ground Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge: =3D=3DIt was very foggy and we didn't stop. Have planned a trip there = with my son on Dec. 26.
