As I walked toward the noise I flushed an immature Sharp-shinned Hawk from the ground. It dropped its prey, a flicker, which to my surprise flew away to a nearby tree. I suppose the sharpie was having trouble dispatching the flicker since they were about equal size. I didn't have time to stay around to see the outcome, but I suspect by the end of the day there was one less flicker in Maryland.
