MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The St Michaels Count - Sunday, Dec 16th - Some 'unofficial' results and a few comments about this count are provided below: Total species - 97 (91 in year 2000) Total individuals - 60,244 (58,099 in the rain in year 2000) Total Canada Geese - 36,146 (34,374 in year 2000) Biggest surprise: Two Osprey were found. It has been several years since Osprey have been found on this count. Bird species present in higher than usual numbers, possibly due to the warmth of this season; ('00 totals) Forster's Tern 27 (0) Great Blue Heron 78 (32) Common Loon 71 (18 ) Gadwall 3 (0) Wood Duck 7 (0) Killdeer 92 (3) Sanderling 8 (0) Bird Species in low numbers or absent - possibly for the same reasons as above: Canvasback 0 (242) Ruddy Duck 421 (1898) Lesser Scaup 0 (26) Some other comments : - Many species of migrating ducks have not yet come down here - This seemed to be a very good year for Song Sparrows: 477 (163) - The Bobwhite count was up to 44, whereas only 1 was found in '00 - Meadowlark numbers were up to 56, whereas 10 were found in '00 - Carolina Wren numbers were up: 210 (94) - and there were lots more Brown Creepers found: 23 (4) - one uncountable Black Swan was found by one of the teams - a surprising miss - no Gray Catbirds - a nice presence - Red-breasted Nuthatch 73 (0) Eastern Shore weather on the cound day was absolutely elegant, so all the participants, even the birds, seemed to have a great time.
