The impoundments are mostly frozen. Fairly typical count-30 species. Highlights were a male Blue-winged Teal (my first winter record), a male Wood Duck, 2 Barred Owls , 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers, and 5 Purple Finches (1 male and heard the others. Fruit eaters were present in small numbers- 1 Hermit Thrush, 34 Robins , 2 Cedar Waxwings, and 9 Myrtle Warblers. Only found 3 Winter Wrens compared to 7 last week. I now know of 11 Red-headed Woodpeckers here- 4 at the southern end of the impoundments, one near the central parking lot, and 6 between the impoundments and Sycamore Landing Rd. These birds are migrants which stopped here for the winter when the found a good acorn crop, which is why Blue Jays are also fairly common.
