Those who did the Sugarloaf count managed to eke out some birds despite strong winds and cold temperatures. Birds present the day or so before decided to hunker down and not be found (!) but despite everything a number of interesting species were reported at the Tally rally (which represented only about half the sectors reporting). I will mention a few -- Lapland Longspurs among Horned Larks along Oland Rd. and Rt. 85, Wild Turkey in several spots, Raven, American Tree, Fox and White-crowned Sparrows did get found but not in normal numbers, Killdeer, American Pipit, Northern Harrier, Red-headed Woodpecker, Red-breasted Nuthatch, cooperative Screech Owls despite the windy conditions, good numbers of waterfowl at Black Hill R.P. and some elsewhere, several Bald Eagles, but few half-hardies, a few Phoebes, and there were some House Wrens also reported. NO Loggerhead Shrike -- they are no longer a given on this count, and haven't been for a few years. All in all, a hard day to bird -- I went the first 45 minutes without seeing a single passerine other than crows and starlings! Cheers, happy 2002, Gail Mackiernan ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
