Starting at Centennial Park the highlights were a trio of lovely AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS. The lake was filled with geese and among them we found LESSER SCAUP, RUDDY DUCK, PIED-BILLED GREBE, CANVASBACK and RING-NECKED DUCKS. We then went out to the western part of the county where we found a LINCOLN'S SPARROWS (what a way to start the year!). Other sparrows were SWAMP, SAVANNAH, FIELD and WHITE-THROAT. A small flock of AMERICAN PIPITS, a single SNIPE and female TOWHEE were notable. Middle Patuxent Environmental area was hopping with birds. We were delighted to find a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER that allowed great views through the scope. A couple of WINTER WRENS, five HERMIT THRUSHES and singing FOX SPARROW were exciting. BROWN CREEPERS, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, CEDAR WAXWINGS and EASTERN BLUEBIRDS kept us entertained. Out to Triadelphia to end the day where we found 125+ COMMON MERGANSERS and a few AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS. 60 species in all with some very strange misses (house finch?? and hairy woodpecker)!
