Maybe the trick was getting away from the water and heading for the woods. Best birding was watching 5 Black Vultures between Fletcher's Boathouse and Chain Bridge. Other faves seen include Brown Creeper at Roosevelt Island and Winter Wren in Rock Creek Park. Other birds seen include: Fletcher's Boathouse -- Song Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Carolina Wren, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee, Belted Kingfisher, Great Blue Heron, Dark-eyed Junco. Chain Bridge -- Northern Flicker, Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Bluebird, American Goldfinch, Mourning Dove. Roosevelt Island -- Killdeer, American Robin, House Finch, Red-winged Blackbird, Downy Woodpecker.
