I ended the day with 51 species, after stopping at 4-mile Run (4MR), Gravelly Point (GP), Hains Point (HP), Anacostia River Park (ARP), Kenilworth Park (KP), and the Arboretum (Arb). All birds were in seen in DC, even if I was standing in VA. Here are some highlights (or species mentioned because they may be new for the comp list - not all of the areas that Mike Bowen mentioned are in DC): Pied-billed Grebe - 15 (4MR) Double-crested Cormorant - 1 (HP) Great Blue Heron - 2 (ARP) Black-crowned Night-Heron - 2 (ARP) Am. Black Duck - c.50 (4MR) Lesser Scaup - 3 (4MR) Common Merganser - 1 (KP) Hooded Merganser - 8 (KP) Ruddy Duck - 1 (4MR) Sharp-shinned Hawk - 2 (Arb) Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 @ 4MR, 1 @ KP Bald Eagle - 1 @ 4MR, 1 @ KP American Kestrel - 1 (GP) Merlin - 2 (GP) American Coot - c.375 (4MR - a decent-sized flock) Killdeer - 12 (KP/KAG) Red-bellied Woodpecker - 1 (KP) Northern Flicker - 1 (KP) Eastern Bluebird - 3 (KP) Hermit Thrush - 2 (KP) American Robin - c.100 (Arb) Cedar Waxwing - c.70 (Arb) Savannah Sparrow - 1 (KP) Brown-headed Cowbird - 12 (ARP) Red-winged Blackbird - 2 (GP) Purple Finch - 1 (Arb) Good Birding for 2002!
