We birded Wharf Road and the board walk area to Mockley Point in the Park. There were a number of duck hunters out which may have driven out the thousands of ducks observed on the Fort Belvoir count on Sunday. We found the following: 1 Pied-billed Grebe 2 Great-blue Heron 1 GREAT EGRET 1 Turkey Vulture ~1000 Canada Goose ~50 Gadwall 10 American Wigeon 20 American Black Duck 80 Mallard 7 Northern Shoveler 5 Northern Pintail 1 male Green-winged Teal 6 Canvasback 20 Redhead 8 Ring-necked Duck - one was attacked repeatedly by a Bald Eagle but eluded its predator successfully by diving. About a five minute show. I called the police but they did not come. 20 Lesser Scaup - down from 800 on 12/30 25 Bufflehead 3 Hooded Merganser 10 Ruddy Duck 3 Bald Eagle 1 Red-shouldered Hawk 2 Red-tailed Hawk 1 Killdeer - actually in VA shore 160 Ring-billed Gull ? Herring Gull 6 Mourning Dove 6 Red-bellied Woodpecker 4 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 5 Downy Woodpecker 3 Hairy Woodpecker 6 Northern Flicker 2 Pileated Woodpecker 1 Eastern Phoebe 6 Blue Jay 70 American Crow 5 Fish Crow 8 Carolina Chickadee 9 Tufted Titmouse 4 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 Brown Creeper 6 Carolina Wren 1 Winter Wren 6 Golden-crowned Kinglet 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 10 Eastern Bluebird 1 Hermit Thrush 4 Northern Mockingbird European Starling 1 Fox Sparrow 8 Song Sparrow 25 White-throated Sparrow 10 Dark-eyed Junco 9 Northern Cardinal 40 Red-winged Blackbird 6 Eastern Meadowlark 6 House Finch 1 PINE SISKIN at Eric's house in Piscataway Hills 10 American Goldfinch Eric had a female Purple Finch at his house before he met us.
