Dept. of Interior manages a trust fund for royalties due to American Indian tribes, and families from mining or oil and gas extraction on reservation lands. DOI has mismanaged these funds for the last 100 years. Someone finally filed suit over it a few years ago. Bruce Babbitt tried to get it fixed via a computer database, but someone was able to hack in through the DOI web and set up a bogus account for themselves, so the judge overseeing this case has shut everything down. Even the DOI internal email systems are not working for the employees. It is a very bad scene. This is probably way to much information for most of you, but kind of interesting to see how reliant we are on information on the web. You should call the refuge offices directly until the problem is resolved. I am a former DOI employee, so I stay tuned to the latest goings on over there. Apparently the problem has not been resolved. Here's a clip from the original story and the url for the details: December 5, 2001 A federal judge on Wednesday evening threatened yet again to hold Secretary of Interior Gale Norton in contempt as he ordered her department to "immediately" disconnect from the Internet every single computer, server and system that has access to individual Indian trust data. http://www.indiantrust.org/clips.cfm?news_id=158 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Fred Pierce (DNRC)- fpierce@avialantic.com Mid-Atlantic Aviation on the Web - http://www.avialantic.com ** Mid Atlantic Air Museum WWII Weekend Airshow June 7-9 2002 and Planes, Trains, & Automobiles Transporation Show Sept. 21-22 2002 - www.maam.org ** *** World Airshow News - www.worldairshownews.com ** --------------------------------------------------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: Maryland Birds & Birding [mailto:MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM]On Behalf Of Robert Churi Sent: Thursday, January 03, 2002 4:34 PM To: MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM Subject: [MDOSPREY] Fish & Wildlife service websites Anyone know why the Fish & Wildlife service pages no longer work.
