Highlights were about 20 Hooded Mergansers fairly close to the dock at Piney Run Park, Carroll County. There were also 1 or 2 Wigeon, ~20 Ring-necked Ducks, some coots and the usual big collection of Canada Geese and Mallards, and 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. We spent a little time at Pine Knob Road in case any crossbills wanted to show up. They did not. The pines are almost devoid of cones this year. We then went out to southern Frederick County. The fields around New Design Road didn't provide us with anything close. The fields along Cap Stine Road about 1/2 mile north of the metal working plant had about 100 Horned Larks close-up. Unfortunately we could not pick out any Longspurs, and we didn't find any Tree Sparrows. Another highlight: We discovered a buffet pizza place with all-you-can-eat lunch for $3.49 in the little shopping center behind the Burger King about 1/2 mile south of I-70 on the west side. In fact, just about any form of "cuisine" is available in that shopping center. I had a Red-breasted Nuthatch at my feeder in Randallstown today, which is unusual.
