I started by walking upriver from Sycamore Landing for about 1.5 miles. Best duck was Common Goldeneye. I saw at least 5 -- if the second group I saw were different birds, then I saw 9. There were also impressive numbers of Wood Ducks along the Maryland shore -- 30 would be a conservative estimate. Other birds seen on the river include American Wigeon, Bufflehead, and Hooded Merganser. The woods along this stretch were very birdy, especially with woodpeckers. Good numbers of Winter Wren and Brown Creeper were also seen along with a Barred Owl. At Hughes Hollow, I saw an immature Red-headed Woodpecker to complete a 7-woodpecker day. Also seen: Eastern Phoebe, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and Eastern Towhee. Finally, remembering a report of Lesser Black-backed Gull from a few weeks ago, I stopped at Violette's Lock. There weren't many birds, but there was a Lesser Black-backed Gull -- must be my lucky week for that bird (3 in 5 days).
