Please respond so I will know if I can do that block; if not, who is responsible so I can forward sightings to that person. Thanks. Cheers, Kathy Fred Fallon cc: Sent by: Maryland Subject: [MDOSPREY] MD Atlas training session Birds & Birding at Patuxent Bird Club, Beltsville 01/07/02 07:58 PM Please respond to Maryland Birds & Birding This should be of interest to birders in northern PG County area who are considering taking part in the up-coming MD Breeding Bird Atlas: "The MD/DC Breeding Bird Atlas" Tuesday, January 8, 2002 7:30 pm In the 1980's the Maryland Ornithological Society (MOS) initiated a monumental atlas of the distribution of breeding birds in Maryland. The MOS is beginning a new atlas project on January 1, 2002. Over a five year period volunteers will check all areas of Maryland and the District of Columbia for breeding birds. Each volunteer will monitor his own 3 by 3 mile block for evidence of breeding such as mating, nesting, and young. At the end of the 5 years of data collection, an updated atlas will be produced. At the next joint meeting of the Patuxent Bird Club and the Prince George's Audubon Society, Chandler Robbins, Senior Editor of the earlier Atlas of the Breeding Birds of MD and DC, and Bob Ringler, will discuss the history of atlasing, the previous Maryland Atlas, and the upcoming project. If you are at all interested in volunteering for the project, this meeting will be full of important information. Maps and block assignments will be available after the talk. Location: The meeting is held in the complex of buildings just north of the Beltway and west of Route 1 at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC). To reach the meeting location from the Beltway go north on Route 1. A short way north the Agricultural Library, a very tall building that stands by itself on the right side of the road, will be visible. Since a left turn is not allowed at the light, bear right before the Library tower; make a left to get to the traffic light. Drive straight across Route 1 then bear right in front of the buildings on the semi-circular drive. When you reach the end of the buildings, make a sharp left. At the next intersection, turn right, you should be heading downhill with a field on the right and greenhouses on the left. At the bottom of the hill turn right. This leads to a parking lot in front of a modern building with wide entrance steps. The meeting room is on the first floor to the right.
