I am jealous, I would love to see a Northern Lapwing. -----Original Message----- From: Brian MONK [mailto:monkdvm@MSN.COM] Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2002 11:17 PM To: MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM Subject: [MDOSPREY] Netherlands Birding Trip Hi y'all! I just returned from a trip to the Netherlands, and I got a little birding in! I just wanted to tell someone who would appreciate it! 3 species of swan, 7 species of goose, 22 species of waterfowl overall! BTW, does anyone know if the AOU split Common from Green-Winged Teal? If so, what is the new specific name for Green-Winged? Also, what is the latest on the Bean Goose debate (rossicus (serrirostris) vs. fabalis), Brant (hrota vs. nigricans), and Bewick's vs. Tundra Swans? I was also terribly excited to finally see a "real" House Sparrow, European Starling, and Mute Swan! Call me crazy. Lastly, Common Gull and Mew Gull are not the same species. At least to an untravelled East Coaster. The only other explanation is that all gulls are the same species. My list follows: 12/28/01 Birded w/ Marc Kuiper and a benedictine father from Quebec who lives and teaches in Rome, named Herve. Very windy and wet, with poor light for most of the day. Great Crested Grebe N. Fulmar (from the beach, with a hellacious offshore wind) Great Cormorant Grey Heron Mute Swan Whooper Swan Bewick's (Tundra) Swan White-Fronted Goose (flavirostris) Bean Goose (rossicus (serrirostris) & fabalis) Pink-Footed Goose Greylag Goose Canada Goose (I told marc to start killing them now) Barnacle Goose Brant (hrota) Shelduck Egyptian Goose Mallard Gadwall N. Shoveller Wigeon Common Teal Tufted Duck Common Eider Goldeneye Smew Common Merganser Eurasian Coot Northern (Hen) Harrier Common Buzzard Eurasian Sparrowhawk (The equivalent of our Cooper's Hawk) Eurasian Kestrel Eurasian Oystercatcher Pied Avocet Northern Lapwing Dunlin Redshank Spotted Redshank Eurasian Curlew Ruff Black-Headed Gull Common Gull Herring Gull (argenteus & argentatus) Gr. Black-Backed Gull Black-Legged Kittiwake (same view with the Fulmar) Little Gull Rock Dove Stock Dove Common Wood Pigeon Eurasian Collared Dove Sky Lark Redwing Eurasian Blackbird Firecrest (Heard but not seen) Great Tit Blue Tit (Black-billed) Magpie Jackdaw Rook Carrion Crow Eurasian Starling Tree Sparrow Chaffinch 1/1/02 Vondel Park, Amsterdam (Just the new species) Rose-Ringed Parakeet (A large population resides in the park. Quite disturbing to have snow on the ground and a bright green tropical bird fly into your field of view!) (Winter) Wren Robin (Amazingly bright orange bib!) Long-Tailed Tit (A most beautiful bird that puts a chickadee to shame) House Sparrow 1/3/02 Amsterdam Zoo (Just new species) Eurasian Nuthatch Brian Monk, DVM Belcamp, MD "I aspire to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am."
