It was a good day, but that's because my standards are apparently quite low -- at least compared to what Pete Webb can pull off. My best was mid-afternoon behind the visitor's center at Merkle state park. Mixed in with the Canada Geese was a single BRANT, apparently a juvenile based on the white edging of its wing coverts and the complete lack of white on its neck. Seems kind of late for this plumage. Also good was a HOUSE WREN. Fortunately this little gem began scolding me for my negligence as I blindly walked past his tangle. The House Wren was visiting the section of Patuxent River Park at the end of Milltown Landing Road. This is a wonderful area filled with Phoebes, Thrashers, Catbirds, hundreds of sparrows of at least 8 species (9 counting Junco), dozens of Cormorants on the river and Harriers flying over the marsh, etc. It looks like a good place for a great bird; all we need is a visit by someone who can find it. The area is open to the public, but you should have a Patuxent River Park Parking Permit. And it would be best if you had enough sense to avoid the hunters by arriving on Sunday.
