MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit National Park Service is undertaking a General Management Plan for National Capitol Parks -East. Fort Dupont and Kenilworth Parks are the most likely to be affected. Strong proposals for golf (both parks), an expanded ice rink (Fort Dupont) and extensive soccer fields (Kenilworth Park) have been made. The proposed Kenilworth Park soccer fields may have the greatest adverse effect on birdlife, as the plan appears to take up all the space, even the unmown meadow with such species as probably breeding Grasshopper Sparrows. There will be lights for night play, which would illuminate also the portion of the Arboretum directly across the river. I don't know whether or not this kind of lighting affects birds (other than attracting nighthawks.) The Park Service needs to hear from people who support its primary mission to preserve natural habitat.
