Beach. This is one of two pelagic trips being offered there this winter. While we have enough folks to run a trip the following weekend, there is still space for several more birders on that one (Feb. 9 or 10). I realize that many of you who have been with us before have received our notice about this and other trips via e-mail and or snail mail, but perhaps this message about our dire need for participants will encourage some of you to sign up. For those of you who are unfamiliar with our trips, an exciting birding adventure awaits you here off coastal Virginia. In fact, many birders are traveling hundreds of miles to join these trips in hopes of seeing a few new species. For those who have not been with us on a winter trip, this is you chance to see real seabirds like Northern Fulmar, Manx Shearwater, Great Skua, Red Phalarope, Black-legged Kittiwake, Dovekie, Razorbill and Atlantic Puffin. For those who have been with us before, this is you chance to look for Common or Thick-billed Murre and that albatross that you've always dreamed of seeing. It was just three years ago when we documented the first Black-browed Albatross for North America off Virginia Beach, and 364 days later when we photographed a Yellow-nosed Albatross off Hatteras. Yellow-nosed Albatross has also been seen off Ocean City in February. Both of these Virginia Beach trips are Saturday trips with Sunday weather dates, and these cost is $100/person. Our destination is the vicinity of the Norfolk Canyon, a deep trench in the continental shelf about 65 miles seaward of Virginia Beach. We will be sailing aboard the Nancy Anne from Lynnhaven Inlet, which is convenient to I-64 and the CBBT. Our captain is Kevin Seldon, who has run many trips for us here since 1995, and works hard to get us to the birds, even if it means staying a little late. Experienced pelagic birders will be aboard to spot birds and help with identification, and plenty of chum will be on hand to bring the birds close. We also have four trips from Hatteras this winter- Jan. 26(27), Feb. 16(17), Feb. 17/18, and March 9(10). The February trips take place over Presidents Day weekend. The price is the same as for the Va. Beach trips, but because the shelf break is much closer to shore, these should be shorter trips. We are also less likely to be completely weathered out in Hatteras. The birds seen should be essentially the same, with perhaps less alcids except for Razorbill, which is often more numerous off the Outer Banks. I hope that some of you can join us on these trips. For more information, please visit our website- http://www.patteson.com/, or call me at (252) 986-1363 (before 10PM please). I would prefer to handle questions about the trips over the phone as I am not always able to check e-mail , but I can retrieve messages on a daily basis.
