I have only been *seriously* birding since last Spring and on this list serve since summer, so I did not know about this incident. I certainly am aware of what to do and what not to do -- sometimes it just takes one serious person to stand up and say no to get the others to follow. Since I am an environmentalist by profession I am pretty used to standing up to some pretty tough folks. I'll let you know how he behaves this time around. He did tell us that bringing cameras probably would not be too fruitful as we don't want to get too close to take pictures harass the owl. Maybe he has learned something, or maybe that is just green wash during class time. For those of you who have offered information - thank you. I offered to pass it on with general location information, but Leon declined as he knew the locations of owls closer to our meeting place in Annandale. I think he did some of his own scouting as he brought some Saw-Whet pellets to class this week that he had collected that day. -----Original Message----- From: Karen Morley [mailto:kdmorley@YAHOO.COM] Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 1:13 PM To: MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM Subject: Re: [MDOSPREY] Owl Postings - for students While I hope that you are learning a lot about owls, I am a bit concerned about sharing information with your particular instructor. As many of us recall, there was a problem last winter with unethical birders & photographers overwhelming some Frederick County farm property in order to see a Snowy Owl. Unfortunately, Leon Nawojchik, as the leader of a USDA field trip which detoured to view the owl, did not feel he needed to follow ethical birding behavior in this instance and as a result was not a good role model for his class. When one of our members called to his attention that he was allowing his group to trespass on private property, his attitude was "so what?" I seriously considered contacting the USDA about his behavior, but unfortunately, did not do so. Others who were present could give you more details, and I hope Leon has improved his attitude. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
