Schwarz" Subject: Crow/Pileated Interactions Right now there is a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers in back of my house in Howard County. The wood chips are flying, though I do not believe they are excavating a nesting hole. In any case, a crow, presumbably American, (all I get here though Fish Crows frequent Chatham Mall a mile away)is hanging around the Pileateds, and occassionally flies at them, causing the Pileated to move out of way. Does anybody have any idea of what the crow is up to? Since I've seen no food items collecteby the Pileateds, klepto-piracy does not appear to the motivation. Please reply off-line, so we don't clutter the listserv up too much. I will summarize the replies I receive, if any, and just do one post.
