The February Issue of Birding also had some good information to separate these two animals in the Photo Quiz article. It gave the reference Tyler mentioned and at least one other. Last winter, there was a first year male Baltimore Oriole coming to the sunflower seed feeder that I maintain at work. I tried unsuccesfully to change the ID to Bullock's but couldn't. Anyway, there are some helpful pointers on what to look for, particularly in the scapulars, to differentiate. Tyler Bell bell@acnatsci.org California, MD Wave that flag...wave it wide and high! Since it seems to return regularly, this would be an opportunity to study the bird with Bullock's in mind. The differences are admittedly subtle, but it's worth a second look.
