What you were hearing sounds like the "dueting" that Great Horned Owls do when courting. This would constitute probable breeding. Later in the nesting season you might hear the young begging food from the parents or find the nest (easiest to do after the leaves fall in the fall and winter -- Used Nest = UN and is a confirmed category but cannot be used for used nests from the 2001 nesting season as that is prior to our Atlas period of 2002-2006). If you are not the responsible person for this Atlas block, be sure to forward the report to that person or fill out an incidental report form. I noticed them around 11:45, but they were still calling a couple hours later. They sounded like they could have been side by side, because the calls were coming from the same area, but overlapping each other. Should I take this as a sign of breeding activity? Also nice hearing all the birds first thing in the morning - the Red Winged Blackbirds are getting very noisy, and the Mourning Doves are boo-hooing prettily.
