A late afternoon hike through the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area produced the oft reported RED-HEADED WOODPECKER (over the river where stop #13 should be located, though the post is missing), and a pair of calling BARRED OWLs, along with BROWN CREEPER and FOX SPARROW. A quick stop at Brighton Dam produced a good 100 COMMON MERGANSERs but no other waterfowl, and among the Ring-billed and Herring Gulls was a single adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL (not common in Ho Co). Western Howard Co., in the vicinity of Annapolis Rock Rd. offered a vocalizing WILD TURKEY and six AMERICAN WOODCOCKs peenting, displaying, and moving around, with one flying over my head so close I thought of ducking, but it pulled up at the last second.
