I always thought it had to do with their way of white-washing the perching areas with their droppings. On the farms, with horses around, the spatsies were present by the hundreds. Our highschool FFA Chapter paid a bounty on them. My brother and I would visit the haylofts of cooperative neighbors at night, and eradicate fair numbers of them. I'm sure our activities did not really make any dent in the total population.
