The woodpecker was just across the river, and sat very cooperatively in full view for several minutes, pecking lazily at the branch. Also present in the MPEA were Red-bellied, Downy, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers, as well as a Northern Flicker. The most interesting songbirds were a Fox Sparrow and a White-breasted Nuthatch. We also heard a pair of Barred Owls duetting just north of Post 13, where the path turns away from the river. They were very close, but they left before we could find them. We heard them again some distance away a short time later.
