A stop at the Henryton Road access to = Patapsco State Park produced YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, BROWN CREEPER = (also on Carroll Co. side of river), WINTER WREN, and many = GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS. Out west, the pond on the north side of Hwy 144, visible from Emmaus = Road had 4 male GADWALLs, 34 AMERICAN WIGEON (majority males), 22 = RING-NECKED DUCKs (mostly males), and 3 HOODED MERGANSERs (2m, 1f), = along with a flyby RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. The ponds near the north end of Daisy Rd. had no waterfowl, but three = flyover HORNED LARKs kept things interesting. Along Rte 94, the ponds = at Larriland Farms produced 32 RING-NECKED DUCKs (all but three were = drakes), and two male HOODED MERGs. An AMERICAN KESTREL was perched on = the wire along Hwy 94, not far from the above mentioned ponds. Finally, the state land along Annapolis Rock Rd. was alive with AMERICAN = WOODCOCKs. I plunked my camping chair out in the middle of the field, = and I counted 9 woodcocks, after which I stopped counting, because I = didn't know if I was repeating birds or not. Most of the birds were = seen flying overhead, and at one time I had a pair interacting as they = made a big loop overhead. The first peent occurred at precisely 6:06 = p.m., and the last was heard at 6:31 p.m. All in all, a satisfying afternoon of birding.
