To the best of my knowledge flickers are not known to add material to a nest site. They do excavate holes and may carry wood chips away from the site. This may have been the case for a roost site. Nest site selection occurs after mating and even in this mild winter it is probably a little early in the season. The earliest Maryland egg date is April 12. Concerning the tick. I found a Deer Tick crawling on me on Feb. 10 after an excursion at Morgan Run NEA. This is the first Deer Tick I have ever found in Carroll County. I suspect the mild, dry weather has something to do with this early emergence in the Piedmont.
