The researchers believe that "the effects of global warming may be robbing Maryland and a half-dozen other states of an important piece of their heritage by hastening the departure of their state birds ... [causing] shifting songbird ranges, altering migration behavior and perhaps diminishing some species' ability to survive." They're not saying that this will occur any time very soon, or even predicting with certainty that it will happen at all. But the possibilities are clearly a concern for Maryland birders.
