On Saturday, March 2, I did some predawn atlassing in St. Mary's County, then visited a few spots for waterbirds. A pair of Barred Owls were calling near Chaptico. One American Woodcok was displaying just before dawn along Colburn Wharf Rd. One Great Horned Owl sounded off as the day was dawning. Coltons Point: Northern Gannet 1 far out in the Potomac R., Osprey 2 [my first of the year], Common Goldeneye 14, Long-tailed Duck 20, Bufflehead 15 Buttonwood Wharf: Red-throated Loon 1, Common Loon 4, Horned Grebe 11, Red-necked Grebe 3, Tundra Swan 30, Canada Goose 40, Mallard 15, Canvasback 1, Lesser Scaup 95, Bufflehead 110, Ruddy Duck 20, Forster's Tern 23 Chaptico Wharf: Double-crested Cormorant 5, Red-breasted Merganser 90, Ruddy Duck 800, Bufflehead 15, Chipping Sparrow 2 Wicomico Shores: Double-crested Cormorant 28, Ruddy Duck 2000, Forster's Tern 8 Beauvue ponds: Tundra Swan 14, Gadwall 11, American Wigeon 2, Ring-necked Duck 12 Abell's Wharf: Common Loon 2, White-crowned Sparrow 10, Field Sparrow 12 The evening before [March 1] I went to Indian Creek WMA near Benedict in Charles County to atlas some. Four American Woodcock started displaying just after sunset. A pair of Barred Owls called in the distance. While waiting for sunset I checked a few hedgerows and tallied: Fox Sparrow 1, Brown Thrasher 1, Gray Catbird 1, and Eastern Towhee 3, among the commoner species. Good Birding!
