Some of the best birding in London is at the newly opened Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust centre at Barnes just a few miles from Big Ben. If you have more time on your hands, Norfolk and Suffolk hold the best highlights nearby. Minsmere on the Suffolk coast has a great selection of habitats and birds, the north Norfolk coast has good reserves at Titchwell, Cley and Blakeney to name a few. Helm publish a "Where to Watch Birds in ..." series of bird finding guides for every county in England and separate guides for Scotland and Wales. These have been the benchmaark for many years. Last year, a new guide appeared for Norfolk - Norfolk: a Birdwatcher's Site Guide (ISBN 0-9528065-1-7). This has a more up to date feel, very like the ABA guides, and I'd recommend it. For field guides, I've used Lars Jonsson, Birds of Europe for many years, and have always found it excellent. More recently, folk are raving about the Collins Bird Guide by Mullarney, Svensson, Zetterstrom and Grant. I confess I haven't opened a copy of the latter, but that's a very impressive list of authors and illustrators, so I would expect it to be the current 'must have'. Further comment is somewhat off topic for this list, so if you would like more info about the seabird cliffs of Wales or Scotland, the arctic birds of Scotland or the tern colonies on the Northumberland coast, drop me a line off-list. cheers Paul McGowan mcgowans@maxinter.net Ellicott City, HoCo Ben Poscover wrote: > Ruth and I will be going to London in May. Well be on a fourteen day trip with Elderhostel. One thing they do is to build in free time so participants can do other things they might like. We would hope to do a bit of birding but know absolutely nothing about how to go about this. Perhaps you all can help us. Also, please mention any guides that we might use. > > Thank you very much. > >Ben Poscover >Towson MD >bposcove@bcpl.net > >======================================================================= >To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com >with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey >======================================================================= > >. > ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
