I go home (Vermont) every May, every year, and they are everywhere - often earlier than I would expect and staying later on those years that I'm lucky enough to be home in September. ********************** Frank Boyle Laurel, MD ravenfrank@earthlink.net ********************** -----Original Message----- From: Maryland Birds & Birding [mailto:MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM] On Behalf Of Sherry Peruzzi Sent: Monday, March 04, 2002 5:59 PM To: MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM Subject: [MDOSPREY] A Baltimore Without Orioles? "A Baltimore Without Orioles?" is the headline of an article in today's Washington Post reporting on the results of study done by the National Wildlife Federation and the American Bird Conservancy. The researchers believe that "the effects of global warming may be robbing Maryland and a half-dozen other states of an important piece of their heritage by hastening the departure of their state birds ... [causing] shifting songbird ranges, altering migration behavior and perhaps diminishing some species' ability to survive." They're not saying that this will occur any time very soon, or even predicting with certainty that it will happen at all. But the possibilities are clearly a concern for Maryland birders.
