The Gadwall Kurt reported was not present, but at about 4:30 pm a pair of American Wigeons was in the center of the lake slightly east of the boat launching ramp. Around 5:00 I saw the Wigeons (probably the same pair) at the west end of the lake. They stayed fairly close to the bridge, giving an excellent view. Several Buffleheads were feeding actively at the east end of the lake near the dam. Near the Wood Duck Pond, a Fish Crow was calling and a flock of American Goldfinches flitted among the trees. The Red-winged Blackbirds were out in force throughout the WMA at the west end of the lake, calling loudly from the tops of the trees, and fourteen Ring-necked Ducks were feeding near the bridge at the west end. Song sparrows sang their beautiful songs in a number of places around the lake. We noticed with mixed feelings that a great deal of clearing has been done along the sewer lines on the north side of the lake. I hate to see trees cut down, but the multiflora won't be missed, and it does provide new paths into sections of woods that were difficult or impossible to reach.
