I am from the UK and have been living in Ellicott City for about 18 months. I keep a month-by-month list of garden birds I see and have noted the usual increase at this time of year. Last Monday I saw what I am sure was a Cooper's hawk in a large mulberry tree in the yard. I have never seen one before but I got a really good look at it through my binoculars. After looking in my bird books I am sure it was a Cooper's. I regularly see both red tails and red shoulders and it certainly wasn't either of them. My bird books emphasize the similarity with sharp-shinned but this looked larger and had a noticeably dark crown. I wondered whether anyone else has seen one around the Gray Rock region.
